Green Agriculture

Vitsolc's vision

Food vs energy?

One may argue that solar panels are more suitable on rooftops than in solar farms, where they often take up fertile land and thus compete with the farming of crops. But why not leverage the same surface area to farm both crops and solar energy at the same time? The good news is that, with Vitsolc’s cutting-edge technology, agriculture and electricity production can actually coexist.

Our transparent photovoltaic technology can be integrated into the glass roofs of greenhouses to capture a specific part of the sunlight irradiation to produce electricity, whilst still letting through the wavelengths that are beneficial for photosynthesis. Also, for crops cultivated in regions with high insolation, our solar cells can be tuned for optimal light management, ensuring ideal light levels reach the crops.

Thanks to our technology, greenhouses can support plant growth whilst simultaneously producing clean energy, making better and more efficient use of available land that could be a step forward in the green transition for the agricultural sector.

Combine Agricultural production with Solar Energy generation

  • Natural resources

Climate change is reducing the availability of natural resources, while continued growth demands increasing amounts of water and energy.

  • Irrigation

A large part of irrigation water is wasted due to evaporation.

  • Global warming

Global warming and its fluctuations are affecting crops and accelerating desertification. A mechanism to control sunlight intensity and humidity levels is needed.

  • Solution: transparent solar cells

The use of transparent cells in greenhouses add modulation and filtering possibilities for light and humidity control, and at the same time produce energy.

  • Possible to integrate

Using transparent cells, solar energy harvesting does not need to compete with crops and farm land. With the replacement of existent and new greenhouse roofs, the two can be combined.
